Can my mum own the car?
Any parent can own the vehicle you wish to insure. However, they should live at the same address as you, and must not already have the car insured in their own name. Many of our insurers often accept that some younger drivers will have vehicles owned and registered by their parents.
Please be aware that if the car is insured in a parent/guardian’s name to achieve a cheaper premium but you will be the main user of the vehicle, this is called ‘fronting’. This is to be avoided because a claim could be made invalid meaning that you would not receive a payout and potentially you could be convicted of driving without insurance.
As a minimum the fine would be severe and 6 points is generally the basic penalty. For young drivers this could often mean the loss of their licence.
A vehicle being used for commuting by a student could be the evidence an insurance company would need to invalidate the policy for fronting.
The safest course of action is to insure in the young drivers name. This carries the extra benefit of them being able to accumulate their No Claims Bonus. This can represent 35% discount after just one year, and up to 50% after the second. So in only 2 years time, you could see your premiums drop by half, and further as the years progress.
The Student Motor Quote Company will search a panel of 30 insurers to find the best premium we have available for whatever circumstances you wish to insure.
