O A-Please stay off the roads!
May 30th
Research from the ABI (Association of British Insurers) found that drivers aged 70 or over are three times more likely to be involved in an accident than those aged between 45 and 60.
The ABI believe that the government should take steps to remove licences from ‘unfit drivers’, and submit more stringent tests on elderly drivers. Currently, elderly drivers are able to self-assess themselves fit to drive with a declaration form.
Due to statistics like this, insurers currently increase policy premiums once a driver hits 70 years of age. If steps were included to make sure older drivers were competent, they these additional premiums would fall.
Steps to help with this could include eye examinations and cognitive tests for anyone over 70.
A recent independent survey of 300 drivers showed that half believe that elderly motorists should be banned from driving at peak times, and that generally they made slow but erratic maneuvers.
The ABI research also showed that the upper age limit of older drivers is currently 82, compared to 74 ten years ago.
