Uninsured? How Crushing!
5th July 2006

Police in Tayside have seized a number of vehicles from drivers that do not have a licence or insurance. Around 15 of these will be crushed unless the drivers come forward with the correct documentation. They are not only targeting cars in this latest crackdown, they have also seized motorbikes and a horsebox.

Uninsured drivers cost the insurance industry around £400 million is claims every year, a figure that looks to be increasing.

Only a small amount of drivers whose cars were seized have paid the £105 penalty plus the £12 a day storage costs.

Advanced roadside surveillance cameras are able to check the registration of cars against national records to see if a vehicle meets current UK Road Laws.

Despite this operation only being in use for a short period, already 42 cars have been taken in by the police, who believe that they will seize over 1,000 cars in a single year.
